Terms & Conditions
Last updated: July 26, 2026
1. Acceptance of Terms
By creating an account or otherwise using Luminate, you agree to these Terms & Conditions and to our Privacy Policy. If you don't agree, please don't use Luminate.
2. Description of the Service
Luminate is a course question-and-answer platform paired with an AI teaching assistant ("Auto TA") and an AI Socratic Tutor. It is currently offered as a free pilot to a limited set of university courses. Features, availability, and pricing may change as the pilot progresses.
3. Eligibility
Luminate is intended for university students, teaching assistants, and instructors who are 18 years of age or older. You may only join a course on Luminate using a join code provided by an instructor or institution you are actually enrolled with.
4. Accounts & Credentials
You're responsible for keeping your login credentials confidential and for all activity that happens under your account. Tell us right away if you suspect unauthorized access to your account.
5. Acceptable Use
You agree not to:
- Use the Socratic Tutor, Auto TA, or the course board to complete graded work in a way that violates your institution's academic integrity policy — the Tutor is designed to guide, not to do the work for you.
- Post content that is harassing, hateful, illegal, or infringes someone else's rights.
- Attempt to circumvent rate limits, scrape the platform, or otherwise abuse the AI features (for example, using them as a general-purpose AI proxy unrelated to your coursework).
- Share your account, or a course join code, with anyone not entitled to access that course.
- Attempt to access another user's account, or data outside a course you belong to.
6. AI-Generated Content Disclaimer
Auto TA drafts and Socratic Tutor responses are generated by AI and may be incomplete, out of date, or simply wrong. A draft marked "Verified" has been reviewed and endorsed by a human TA or instructor; anything else has not been reviewed by course staff and should be treated as a starting point, not an authoritative answer. Luminate and the AI providers we use are not responsible for decisions made in reliance on unverified AI output.
7. Content Ownership & License
You retain ownership of the questions, replies, and files you post. By posting content to Luminate, you grant us a license to host, display, reproduce, and process that content as needed to operate the product — including sending it to third-party AI providers (see our Privacy Policy) to generate a response. This license ends when your content is deleted, except where a copy has already been generated as part of an AI response you or another user has already received.
8. Instructor & Institution Rights
Instructors and TAs for a course can view, edit, endorse, or remove content posted within that course, and manage who is enrolled. Your institution may have its own policies governing your use of tools like Luminate as part of a course — those policies apply alongside these Terms.
9. Pilot Disclaimer & No Warranty
Luminate is provided "as is" during this pilot, without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement. We don't guarantee the service will be uninterrupted, error-free, or available at any particular time, and features may change or be removed as we learn from the pilot.
10. Limitation of Liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, Luminate will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages arising from your use of the service, including reliance on AI-generated content. Our total liability for any claim relating to Luminate will not exceed the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim (which, during a free pilot, is zero).
11. Termination
We may suspend or terminate your access if you violate these Terms, at the request of your institution, or at the end of a pilot term, with notice where practicable. You may stop using Luminate at any time.
12. Governing Law
These Terms are governed by the laws of the Province of British Columbia, Canada, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Any dispute arising from these Terms or your use of Luminate will be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of British Columbia.
13. Changes to These Terms
We may update these Terms as Luminate evolves. If we make a material change, we'll update the date at the top of this page and, where appropriate, let pilot courses know directly. Continued use of Luminate after a change means you accept the updated Terms.
